Johannes Cabal the...Plush Necromancer?

Description

Well, this was a challenging plush to make, for several reasons...It's Johannes Cabal the necromancer, in adorable plushie form, from the Johannes Cabal book series and short stories, by Jonathan L. Howard. It's such a good series, full of dark humor and supernatural shenanigans.

I've...never made a plush of a book character before...Well, not one that has not had any sort of appearance in a movie or TV series yet.  But Cabal is pretty straightforward in description, so I though I'd try to make my own interpretation of him, in slightly chibi plush form.  Also a bit rare is the fact that he's not smiling.  I always default to character plushes wearing some sort of smile, but Cabal...uh...doesn't really smile that often...so, to preserve his reputation, I did not make him smile.

This plush was also tricky to work on because of all of clothing layers I had to make.  And most of those pieces are removable.  The white shirt, shoes, and pants are not removable, though.  Every other piece of clothing has velcro on it for quick removals and readjustments.  I am oddly proud of that snazzy black vest I made.

The glasses frame was shaped by my dad (he soldered it all together for me), and then the side baffles and blue tinted lenses were added by me.

The cane sword was my favorite thing to make.  I sanded a piece of wood into a nice, pointy blade and then sculpted a skull for the top out of Crayola Model Magic clay.  I dunno, I just find it amusing to use a children's quick-drying puffy clay to sculpt a slightly realistic skull. Maybe that's why I like the cane sword so much...

Ah yes, and the cane attaches to Cabal's Gladstone bag via some straps with, you guessed it, more velcro on them.  The bag has cardstock inside it to give it some support.  The bag can open, and there is room for stuff in there...but I haven't made any other extra props for that yet...I did not make his favorite revolver, but if I ever do, I'll put it in that bag, for sure.

Maybe some day I'll make a fancy dress-up plush of Cabal's brother, Horst, to complete the set.  He doesn't have any props to lug around, but he certainly has a cheerier wardrobe than his black-clad brother.

This plush is not for sale. It was just a fan-made plushie in appreciation of an excellent book series.
